Experimental/Amateur-Built

I have been a member of the EAA since before I earned my Private Pilot certificate.  I've helped with construction of numerous designs including: Zenith STOL 701, Vans RV-7, AirCam, Mustang II, and am currently working on a Sonex.  Fly with a CFI that is familiar with the experimental aircraft movement.  The success of the homebuilt culture is incumbent upon us as aircraft builders to acheive and maintain an added level of pilot currency and skill.  There are many considerations before you take flight in the aircraft you've spent so much time constructing.  Becoming a test pilot for an airplane you've built can be rewarding, but the challenges can be very different than flying a more docile training aircraft.

Suggestions for homebuilders:

  • Make sure you are current as a pilot before you test-fly your own creation.
  • Earn your certificate in your own aircraft.
  • Obtain transition training for your experimental aircraft.
  • Learn the unique handling characteristics that your newly build airplane may have that differ from the usual 'trainers'

I am happy to give primary or additional training in your experimental aircraft.
